Were I to need to get in touch with one of the old gods—a once-powerful deity, quick with a hammer and slow to forgive; a blunt justice for an equivocal world gone soft—I’d like to believe he’s living out his last days in Montevallo, Alabama, repairing flat-screens and selling way more 50-gallon drums of algaecide than you’d expect for a town of this size.
